Rehab: Week 1

11 Oct

In the past six years the longest I’ve gone without Mountain Dew is 24 hours, at best.  So naturally, the idea of going three months was enough to make a grown man cry.  And I’m man enough to admit that I did (in the shower with the radio on so no one could hear).  Most addicts (read: celebrities) with my level of reliance on a foreign substance seek treatment through a rehabilitation clinic where trained professionals can help them battle their demons.  I called a handful of clinics in Southern California seeking admittance, only to be laughed at when asked what addiction I was battling.

Well the joke is on them.  It has been just over a week since I started my Dew-fast (officially started on Oct. 1) and I’m feeling strong.  Admittedly, the first two days were full of doubt, anguish, hallucinations, etc.  But I weathered the storm.  Having never given up Mtn. Dew for any extended period of time in the past six years, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, nor am I sure what to expect as the time wares on.  But in a recent episode of the TV show Modern Family, I caught a possible glimpse of the possible stages yet to come as two of the characters attempted a juice fast.

What stage am I in right now?  I’m not quite sure.  My wife and co-workers would tell you I’m in the Mountain Man stage (Void of any desire to maintain a dignified appearance, I haven’t shaved since I started the fast).  Maybe they’re right.  Perhaps in some odd way I expect my beard to fill the void left when Mountain Dew was so quickly (read: savagely) torn from my life.

Until next week, stay thirsty my friends.

You Give money, I Give Up Dew

16 Sep

Those who know me know I love Mountain Dew.  Many of those who don’t know me know I love it (because I’m usually holding one in one hand).  Speaking of one hand, that’s all I would need to count the number of days I HAVEN’T had one in the last six years.  Truth be told, I’m drinking one even as a write this.   And now, I’m offering to give it up for an entire year.  Here are the details….

I work for an awesome company, Scentsy.  Scentsy is celebrating it’s 7th anniversary next week.  In 7 years (or 84 months), Scentsy has grown from a small business run out of an ocean trailer on a family farm to a thriving business with over 100,000 active consultants in the US, Canada, Puerto Rico, Guam, Germany, and the United Kingdom.  To celebrate our journey, Scentsy is holding an 84 hour teeter totter-athon (one hour for each month we’ve been around).  The teeter totter will be in motion for 84 hours straight.  To ensure this happens, Scentsy’s owners Orville and Heidi Thompson, are paying $1000 an hour for all 84 hours for the right to decide who rides the teeter totter each hour.  The money is being donated to one of seven local children’s charities.

As employees, we’ve been given the chance to buy back the hours for $1,001/hour.  The money we raise also goes to one of seven children’s charities and we get to choose who rides the teeter totter for an hour.  In an effort to do my part, I am offering to give up my beloved Mountain Dew.

For every $100 you help me raise, I will give up Mountain Dew for one month.  If we reach my goal of $1,001, I will give it up for an entire year.  I don’t have much time though.  The teeter-tottering begins in 4 days, on Tuesday Sept. 20th.  Click the donate button below to donate via paypal.  100% of your donation will go to the seven children’s charities benefiting from the Scentsy Teeter-Totter-A-Thon event.
